We are very grateful to the Plymouth Charity Club for their generous donation supporting our Ocean Discoverability programme. This contribution has allowed us to welcome children and young people with special educational needs, along with their teaching team, to The Island Trust.
This programme nurtures a connection with the sea and is designed to introduce young people to the importance of the marine environment, not just for its beauty and biodiversity but also for its role in our climate and economy. By fostering this understanding, we aim to inspire a new generation of ocean stewards in Plymouth who are passionate about protecting our seas and exploring the opportunities they offer.
After a safety briefing and familiarisation with our traditional tall ship, Johanna Lucretia, the kids begin to observe marine life. Through both an onboard microscope and underwater camera, there’s a rare glimpse into the underwater world from around Plymouth’s coastal areas.
Those who wish to, help hoist the sails and steer the boat, gaining hands-on experience in sailing. And for those unable to actively participate, there is the unique and stimulating sensory experience of being at sea.
The day concluded with the children reflecting on their initial knowledge compared to what they learned throughout the experience. One participant shared, “The boat was really peaceful and relaxed. All the staff were so kind and knowledgeable. There were also plenty of jobs to do on the boat, which was really fun.”.
