Teachers and Youth Leaders Taster Day Sails
Twice a year we run free taster day sails for Teachers and Youth Leaders, where you can find out more about the fabulous work we do with schools, colleges and youth groups. The day will give you an opportunity to spend time with our staff, ask questions and get involved in sailing the boat.
Next Taster Day Sail – 15 September 2018
We crew up at Plymouth Yacht Haven at 9:30am, and after a safety briefing we will set sail, sailing around the sound, stopping for lunch, before heading back to Plymouth Yacht Haven. The day will finish around 4pm.
Waterproofs, safety equipment, and plenty of hot drinks and lunch is provided. Wear comfortable clothing and bring something warm in the event it is cool. Hats and gloves are advisable depending on the time of year. There are toilets (heads in nautical terms) onboard the boat.
Please get in touch if you would like to book a place, or for more information. Places are limited.
The benefits to the young people that sail with us are immense, not only from learning to sail, but in raising their confidence, motivation and communication skills. They learn to work as a team and are involved in all aspects of running the boat, from raising the sails, navigation, cooking, keeping the boat clean and tidy.
The Island Trust has many years experience of providing sailing expeditions for groups, schools and colleges. We have extensive experience of working with groups of young people with special educational needs, moderate learning difficulties and challenging behaviour. We coach sailing to young people with both physical and mental disabilities, and our staff have been trained in teaching those with visual and hearing impairment.
Our highly trained professional sailing staff will ensure that every group’s residential is a valuable learning experience as well as an exciting and enjoyable voyage.
Each sailing expedition is tailored specifically to the needs of the group, with consultation between the Skipper and Group Leader, to ensure that we are able to create the optimum learning environment. Most sailing weeks offer the opportunity to work towards an RYA certificate.
We raise funds to support this work and offer bursaries for young people who fall into this category. Read more about The Island Trust on our About page.
We are looking forward to meeting you and giving you a taste of what The Island Trust has to offer.
