Sailing Adventure Activities
For groups and individuals of all ages
Gaining RYA qualifications
We are an Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Recognised Training Establishment. We offer a range of RYA Sailing courses. A week sailing onboard one of our vessels can be enough to gain an RYA Certificate, part of an internationally recognised vocational training scheme; This can lead to Professional Sailing Qualifications as a Yacht Skipper, 1st Mate, Cook or Deck Hand.
Please contact us for more information and availability.
Teenage sailing weeks
Voyages for individual teenagers during the school holidays. Have fun, meet new friends and work towards RYA qualifications. All voyages start and finish in Plymouth, unless stated otherwise, and could count for your DofE Gold Residential – always check with your DofE Leader first. Voyages follow the RYA Cruising syllabus.
Voyagers participate in every aspect of life onboard, under full instruction from our professional sailing staff learning about navigation, helming, cooking, making sail, weighing anchor… part of the ship, part of the crew!
School and Group sailing
Voyages for groups of young people from schools, home education networks, and youth organisations are available from March to October.
Group voyages can be tailored perfectly for your group’s needs and we have extensive experience of working with a diverse range of young people with specific educational, physical and behavioural needs.
Our staff are highly trained in youth work, making a week’s voyage, a safe, challenging and exhilarating, personal achievement.

Adult voyages and courses
Throughout the sailing season we run a number of RYA Competent Crew, Day Skipper Practical, Yachtmaster Exam Preparation six day courses, and occasional voyages specifically for adults.
We regularly take part in the annual Pilot Cutter World Championship (Pilot Cutter Review) racing weekend in St Mawes, and the Paimpol Sea Shanty Festival in Brittany every other year.
More information about RYA courses and voyages can be found on our availability page.
Paimpol Festival du Chant de Marin
Every two years around 200 traditional sailing boats gather in the port of Paimpol for the world-renowned three day Breton Sea Shanty Festival. The 2017 Festival was held on the weekend of 11, 12 and 13 August, when our 72ft Pilot Cutter Pegasus sailed with a full boat of adults to this fun and exciting cultural experience. The next festival will be in 2019.
No previous sailing experience is necessary, and whether you have sailed before or not, all are welcome to take as active a role in the sailing of the boat as you feel capable. Full instruction in safety, steering and basic seamanship will be given, and if you have an interest in more than the basics don’t be afraid to ask – our onboard crew will be happy to teach and demonstrate to further your own knowledge.
All voyages are operated by The Island Trust’s trading subsidiary Island (Cutter) Ltd.
